Having choreographed her first dance, Homeless, at the age of eleven Kara Tatelbaum discovered her creative prowess and love of dance early in life. After graduating from Tisch School of the Arts at NYU as a University Honors Scholar, Kara began her career as a professional dancer and choreographer, eventually starting her own modern dance company, Independentdancemaker at the age of twenty-one where she earned accolades from The New York Times, Dance Insider, The New Yorker, The Village Voice, and The New York Press.

After suffering from painful injuries, including two hip surgeries, she turned to Pilates to pay the bills, putting her dance dreams on hold. During this time, she earned her Mat Certification from Power Pilates, and Reformer Certification from Pilates Academy International (after initially failing due to a nasty margarita hangover) and began teaching extensively for major fitness chains, corporations, and private clients. After meeting her husband (in a Pilates class of course) seeking therapy, and many more margaritas, Kara came to accept that it was okay to discover a new path, even if it wasn't necessarily the one she had originally envisioned for herself. Whether she liked it or not, over the next fifteen years she became one of the most sought-after Pilates instructors, teaching extensively all over Manhattan. As an in-demand instructor, at one point she taught the most Pilates classes of any NYC Crunch instructor. She's also been on staff at Clay, Club H, New York Health and Racquet Club, NYU Coles Gym, New York Yoga, the Y, and corporate clients include Penguin Publishing, Saatchi and Saatchi, and Time Inc.

Today, Kara is also certified in Poolates and is the creator of Barrelates, her own class designed combining Ballet Barre with traditional mat exercises. Kara has been recently featured in many national publications such as TODAY.com, Forbes.com, GoodHousekeeping.com, ReadersDigest.com and StyleCaster.com, among others. She is also a busy mother of two, which inspired her to create Lazy Girl Pilates, a growing lifestyle brand that inspires women everywhere to fit Pilates into their life using quick and easy workouts that can be integrated into any busy schedule. She recently published the first installment of her Lazy Girl Pilates book series, Lazy Girl Pilates: Morning, which eliminates the need to wake up early for a workout or skip it all together when you don't have time. Thanks to simple and quick fitness hacks, readers can now get and stay fit without hassle.
